Kingfisher

Calder & Hebble Navigation, Horbury Bridge
Since we last walked along the towpath to the Figure of 3 locks, they've trimmed back the overhanging hawthorns and the bankside vegetation, mainly for the benefit of anglers but the kingfisher appreciates the clear views that it gets when perching on sawn-off stumps.
Alder has light red or tan coloured timber and its bark and young twigs can be used to produce a yellow dye.
Bramble Leaf Miner
The leaf miner on the bramble headed out towards the edge as it nibbled its way between the upper and lower leaf cuticles from its starting point halfway along the third vein up from the stalk. It crossed its own path only once as it made its tour back around to halfway along vein two.
Very few of the bramble leaves showed traces of leaf miner damage.
