Putting our basket of ferns out in the summer didn't seem to do them an awful lot of good. On the other hand, neither did bringing them back in here in September. Somehow they never seemed to burst back into new growth. A few weeks ago Barbara spotted two tiny snails which she put outside but that wasn't the end of the problem: earlier this week she discovered a large green caterpillar which fell off when she was watering the ferns. What else is hidden in there?! With almost every leaf nibbled and some of the plants reduced to twiggy skeletons, I'm afraid that it's time to consign the ferns to the compost heap.
