I TAKE my canvas chair down to the pond this afternoon and spend 30 minutes or so drawing the cuckoo flower and the other wild flowers that I can see without moving the chair.

I recently bought the Collins Complete Guides to British Trees, British Wild Flowers and British Insects and I’ve been reading the introductory sections and dipping into the species descriptions. It inspires me to get out and see the flowers, trees and insects for myself. Getting as far as then end of the lawn for half an hour is a good start.

Over the years I’ve painted hundreds of illustrations for field guides but I have to admit that I like the photographic approach in these Collins’ Guides just as much as I like guides with traditional, hand-drawn natural history illustration.
