Ospreys at Easter

Richard Bell, spring/summer 1971

I put up rabbits and hares in the fields along the old railway on the south valley side.

In the dusk the animals take advantage of the lack of disturbance to feed while the birds go to roost . . . most of them. I saw a barn owl come to rest on a wire with its back towards me. I tried to get close to it but it flew off on long silent wings and came to rest at the other side of the bog.

Set off from Leeds at 9.55

Read Dune arrived Aviemore 6.13

The drawing of the (stuffed) hawk's head (left) and the tree (right) show why I gave up using pencil in sketchbooks: it gets rubbed to a dirty grey mush when I'm carrying the sketchbook in my rucksack.
