ONE LAST LOOK from the station towards the centre of Lille. I like to sketch rather than read when I'm waiting for a train, bus or plane. It's a way to relax and, unlike reading a good book, I'm able to keep my attention on what is going on around me. I use a pocket-sized sketchbook and watercolour box.
The advantage of travelling by Eurostar is the speed and the sweeping view it gives of the countryside. The disadvantage, for Barbara and I, is that we don't get the opportunity to stop, as we did last time when we came via the tunnel in our car, for a walk around a coastal nature reserve.
Soon we're descending beneath the Channel. The last we see of France is a cutting in the chalk. The tunnel follows a gentle downfold of the chalk under the Channel.
