A COUPLE OF ISLANDS of high, feathery clouds glow fiery red in the light of the setting sun. Towpath plants such as thistles and Great Willowherb have largely gone to seed and there are plenty of berries on Elder and Hawthorn.
As we walk towards the Figure of Three locks a Kingfisher flies on ahead of us, stopping every so often on what seem to be regular perches overhanging the canal.
Clouds of gnats dance and an amber-winged Large Aeshna circles around, zig-zagging to catch midges.

Several types of fungi are now growing amongst the grasses. One has large scales on the cap.
