THESE ROCKS WERE LAID DOWN 320 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs lived. At this time, great tropical river deltas extended over much of northern England. Deltas are a mixture of swampy ground laced with river channels of deeper moving water which are lined with sand. Fossils in the rocks reveal evidence of past life, such as coiled goniatite shells which swam in the shallow seas into which the rivers flowed.
