small tortoiseshellmarjoram THE MARJORAM in the herb bed is a mass of pinky lilac. Fresh looking Small Tortoiseshells feed at the flowers, as do a variety of bumble bees and several types of Hoverfly. On the patio, scarlet runner bean has climbed beyond its canes and is tumbling over red geraniums and orange Nasturtiums in the hanging basket. The stems of the Nasturtiums are covered in black aphids.

Smokybeebumble bees Smoky, the cat with the crumpled ear, walks down the garden path. We haven't noticed cats in the garden during the nesting season but, now that we've cut away the nettles alongside the hedge, they once again have easy access.
