On the Verge of Autumn

creeping thistle gone to seedrosebay willowherb WE GO TO PICK UP copies of my new book on Thornes Park from the binders'. The roadside verges are now dotted with white downy seedheads of Creeping Thistle, with colour provided by tall stands of Rosebay Willowherb at the back and Autumn Dandelion at the front edge of the mown grass.

Autumn Dandelion Autumn Dandelion, Leontodon autumnalis, looks like a weedier version of its cousin. The flowers aren't as full, the leaves are more bitten into. It will now be in flower until well into the autumn.


greenfinch, male It is again too cool to sit out to eat. Blue Tits and a Robin, which we haven't seen much of recently, are visiting the bird table, as is a Greenfinch, which hovers for a moment at the patio windows.

blackbirds 'White-tail' the Blackbird feeds one of his fledglings on the lawn, and continues to do so when the youngster hops up onto a garden chair.
