Norwegian Wasp
Wild West Yorkshire nature diary, Friday 12th March 1999
A COAL TIT and Robin came to nuts I've spread on the patio. The badger stripes on the back of the coal tit's head make it easy to recognise.
Two short buzzes by the telephone. A worker wasp has come out of winter torpor. Its markings identify it as Norwegian Wasp Dolichovespula morvegia;
 - Black bar divides the face
- Yellow spots at base of antennae
- Four yellow spots at rear of thorax
- Abdomen often reddish at the front
The warmer weather also brings the frogs back into action in the garden pond.
