Pond Life
Wild West Yorkshire nature diary, Wednesday 31st March 1999
AT LAST we have the first two clumps of frogspawn in the garden pond. Other local ponds had spawn as early as February.
A single pond skater patrols the surface, while a whirligig beetle spins about on the surface film, using eyes adapted to see above and below water at the same time.
Smooth newts drift up occasionally from the misty green depths. There are both back swimmer and front swimmer waterboatmen and two or three varieites of small water beetles.
