Out of Africa

Wild West Yorkshire nature diary, Friday 7th May 1999

house martins THEY'RE BACK. For the first time this spring House Martins, back from winter in Africa, fly around the eaves of the house opposite (a nest colony for at least 15 years).

robins The male Robin perches on the washing line, the female comes out and accepts the beakful of food that is offered. The female then flies off for a break. The male, meanwhile, appears quite anxious he flies off in another direction then returns and hovers to inspect the nest.

horse chestnut oak leaves and catkins Oak leaves are opening and the small green catkins of the male flowers hang from the twigs. Horse Chestnut trees are covered with white 'candles' of blossom.
