The Graven Image
WHILE I'M DRAWING an artefact I feel that I'm entering the visual world, the imagination, of the person who made it. I feel very close to a fellow visual artist who struggled to please the client, using the tools, materials and design conventions of the day.
Was he (or she) a local craft worker at one of the Earl's manors?
- From the confidence in the lettering, perhaps the artist was literate?
- A monk perhaps, a lay brother or even a nun?
- Or perhaps a talented specialist with a workshop in a craft quarter of London?
- Am I being too class conscious; could it be a minor member of the ruling classes whose education and time allowed for more than politics and warfare?
