MID MARCH, and at last there's frog spawn in our pond, along with a croaking scrum of some 20 frogs. Frog's legs occasionally stick into the air as they jostle for position. We count about 7 or 8 clumps.
They've chosen the sunniest, shallow corner of the pond; the pebbly corner where birds often bathe. There'll be no bathing here for a while; it is now full of clear greenish jelly dotted with the round black embryos which will become tadpoles.
A Wren sings loudly nearby.
