 Floating vegetation stifled the pond last year. Now that I've raked it out, pond skaters have returned.
The pond skater, or water strider, Gerris, is a predatory bug armed (as is usual with bugs) with piercing mouthparts. It glides over the water surface on the lookout for insect prey.
The wren is still busy adding the finishing touches to his nest in the ivy on the garden shed.
