Starlings and house sparrows were rivals
for the roof corner nest site that I can see through the rooflight
window of my studio as I type this. It's ended up with the house
sparrows taking this site while the starlings have gone for the
roof corner of our neighbours (we live in a semi-detached house).
I took this photograph of a starling through the rooflight window
in the spring of 1992. This is about as far as I've ever got with
bird photography!
When we first moved into this house, 20 years ago, bumble
bees nested in the hole.
Under a brick in the front garden today we uncovered a small colony
of ants.
