On the Garden FrontThursday, 9th September 2004 |
I open the bedroom curtains this morning and there's a blue tit regarding me quizzically six feet in front of me at eye level: it's perching on our telephone wire. Another flies up and perches three feet to the left of it and looks in
at the other pane of the window with a similar 'what's going on here then?'
attitude. Perhaps they've been searching for insects and spiders around
the window frame or on the cotoneaster which is trained up the front of
the house. In the evening there's another winged hunter of small insects on patrol: a large dragonfly zooms back and forth over the garden. A heron heads over the rooftops along a familiar flightline. Perhaps it has been fishing in the beck.
