7.15 p.m. two house martins over the field, back from Africa. A long-legged black cat hops over the fence and crosses the lawn. It gives the impression that it doesn't care for the wet grass, walking as if on tiptoes. It continues its measured progress down the garden path then pauses at the corner of the shrub bed, turns its back on the corner shrubs and 'labels' it, curling its tail in an elegant wave as it completes the job.
