We made a start on the veg beds, sowing a whole packet of Bunyard Exhibition broad beans and some dwarf French beans in one bed and a few sprout plants and red cabbage in another. We've never had much success with cabbages. Once we tried broccoli but it got nibbled by cabbage white caterpillars. I think that it might work this time because we covered the cabbage plants immediately in garden netting. There aren't many butterflies around yet but the wood pigeons and collared doves would find the young cabbages tempting to peck away at. Richard Bell, richard@willowisland.co.uk |
