NewmillerdamWild West Yorkshire nature diary, Monday 12th April 1999WE NOTICE that the ground flora vanishes as we walk away from the edge of the wood. Not just under the conifers, which were planted here for use as pit props, but under beech too. This carpet of Lesser Celandine was at the top edge of the wood. By an old sandstone quarry nearby we find a colony of Green Alknanet under oak trees. A Blackcap sings from a small Sycamore at the edge of a slope planted with Beech. Our walk starts at the restored Newmillerdam colliery site, which was planted with a wild flower seed mix. The odd Cowslip is in flower, as is Gorse and Broom. Birdsfoot Trefoil has yet to bloom.
