Cherry BlossomWild West Yorkshire nature diary, Tuesday 13th April 1999A SWATHE OF PINK BLOSSOM covers the cherry trees by blocks of flats in the centre of town. A popular 1960s urban tree, it may have fallen out of fashion a little but it justifies itself at this time of year.
Wakefield Naturalists' Society monthly sitingsA Sedge Warbler at Wintersett was the earliest ever, as was a Cuckoo which arrived on Sunday. There are lots of Blackcaps and Willow Warblers about (though, personally, I've yet to hear the latter).A Holly Blue was seen on the 3rd of April. There have been Brimstones at Wintersett and at the Walton Colliery site, where, a couple of weeks ago, there were lots of Orange Underwing Moths fluttering around the tops of birches and willows. Swallows and 70 Sand Martins turned up at the Pugneys, a Greenshank at Southern Washlands and there is still at drake Garganey at Millfield Flash. Sweet Violets are in flower.
