TWO MEN are painting the pylon that stands on the skyline above the wood. If I was watching this scene in a movie, I'd assume it was filmed using special effects. They work quickly, clambering to the top and out on the strutts, applying orchre coloured paint using long-handled rollers. I feel uneasy at the top of a ladder. A kestrel hovers over the surrounding stubble, below their level.
A blue sky, with a few patches of feathery cirrus, is gridded by vapour trails that stretch from horizon to horizon. As the sun sets the trails take on colour and start glow against the darkening sky. They disperse but are constantly renewed by passing jets.
Eighteen Mistle Thrushes line up on power lines alongside the canal. We see mistle thrushes in the valley throughout the year. In a month or so they will be joined by migrant thrushes, the Redwings and Fieldfares.
