IT'S BEEN a good summer . . . as you can see from the drinks cans, plastic bottles and crisp packets that lie spread around the old quarry area. Why do so many visitors come to the wood? Do they like it here? If they like it, why do they dump their litter all over the place?
Life is full of mysteries.
This morning Wren and Robin are singing, staking out their claims to winter territories. No sound from any of the summer migrants, they've probably mainly gone by now, although some warblers stay with us through the winter. The scene is dominated by the residents once again.
Jays squawk raucously at each other amongst the oaks. Great Tits search along the branches.
