SHELTERED by the road bridge, and growing alongside the towpath by a sunny south-facing stone wall, the Tree Mallow, Lavatera, a garden escape, has plenty of large pinkish-purple flowers. The Common Mallow, which is flowering again after being cut during the mowing, looks like a smaller version of it.
It's good to know that, having reared one, possibly two, broods and then headed for the wood, our resident Blackbird 'White-tail' has survived. He looks as business-like as ever as he flies from garden to woodland edge.
