A FLOCK of fifty House Martins swirls about at rooftop height as if driven by the wind and rain of this dull grey morning. They fly close to one another and don't seem to be feeding. Besides, there won't be many insects about in this rain. They seem skittish and excited, as if this is a last lap of honour, a last look at their nesting colony, before they begin the journey to Africa.
This evening we're replacing the lock on the front door (or rather our friend is; thanks, Matthew). It's a warm wet night and, with the door open, two slugs come gliding in over the threshold, while a Crane Fly careers about, attracted to the light.
In the afternoon I led a walk at Walton Country Park, which has been developed on the site of the old colliery.
