A
grey squirrel is busy digging in the lawn near the feeder.
It's eating something: has it buried peanuts there? We noticed the peanut
feeder had fallen, or been dragged, from the post when we returned from
Mallorca three weeks ago.
Nine
out of ten of the courgette seeds that Barbara planted
at the weekend are up and showing seed leaves. Three squash
seedlings are up and another is breaking the surface; there were only
six seeds in the packet, but that's plenty for our requirements.
While
we're in Wakefield we take advantage of a 3 for the price of 2 offer on
peat free compost, only to get it home and discover we
picked up very similar bags from adjacent pile, which do contain peat.
We go back and exchange them.
The
cock pheasant vigorously dustbathes on the bottom veg
bed. Good job there are no seeds coming up there. Two wood pigeons
tuck in at the ground feeder. Two long-tailed tits come
through the garden.
There's a musky, heady smell from the rowan which has
just become to blossom by the driveway. The smell reminds me of hyacinths.
