THE DISCARDED remains of a pizza lie in a cardboard carton on a windowsill of the town hall in Ossett. The carton serves as a disposable bird table for the House Sparrows and Starlings that perch on its rim, chirruping and chattering as they nibble, like a group of city-slickers taking a working lunch in a fashionable bistro. |
It rains most of the day. The slugs are out of course, as is a young Toad, which is so small that it could sit on my thumbnail. It is so perfect in its warty texture, so sedate in its movements, that gives the impression of being as old and world-weary as the adults appear to be.
