A CLEAR MOONLESS NIGHT; so I get out the telescope to take a look at the eastern sky. Orion is rising over the wood, the nebula in his 'sword' is just above the trees.
The Pleiades look spectacular - bright and blue. Dozens more stars are visible through the telescope, or even through binoculars.
The Andromeda Galaxy is almost overhead, near the Square of Pegasus.
Between it and the Pleiades, Jupiter is the most brilliant object in the sky, the telescope reveals four of its moons, but I can barely see any banding on the planet.
Not far from it Saturn is showing its ring system well at the moment. The rings are tilted so that we appear to be looking up at them.
