the streamrobin A ROBIN flies up from the bank to sit on a mossy bough overhanging the stream. Apart from that there's not much birdlife in the wood this afternoon.

A farmer ploughs a dark furrow across the stubble of an adjoining field.
white deadnettlestarling A group of White Dead-nettles is still in flower at the edge of the wood.

Starlings chatter on the power lines by the canal bridge. The cacophony is like a busy switchboard with fifty conversations in progress. Their animated chatter is interspersed with wistful whistles.

A small fish rises to nibble a fly caught struggling on the surface of the canal.
